darkcasey Heterodox for me, lays out a varied smorgasbord of threat. Some of the tracks suggest desolation, others some kind of lurking danger, and others still, more abstract feelings of delving into the gaps between realities. If you like your dark ambient ominous, technology-infused and desolate, you should check out Heterodox. Favorite track: the plague doctors.

Heterodox pulls from the traditions of dark, suspenseful movies, soundtracks, and classic Mythos fiction. All of the songs are deeply rooted in the psyche. They don’t elicit being chased through the woods with an axe murderer hot on one’s heels; they point to a realization, a sense that the horror we encounter is far greater than first imagined or understood, the consequences more dire. As the songs build they point to a release, yes, but a release into a world forever changed by these dark notions.

As the song titles in this album hint, heterodox contains visceral visuals and compelling story lines. Inspired by the soundtracks of great thrillers like Arrival, Chernobyl, A Quiet Place, and Vertigo before them, and the work of Trent Reznor and NIN, heterodox creates a narrative arc in its own right, one characterized by gritty and distorted lead lines, unsettled harmonies, and toying tensions. Fans of Sager’s previous album - interlopers - will find this follow up to be a considerably apt next act in his sonic evolution.
